BEEOTOPIA

BEEOTOPIA is a think tank for greener cities, bringing together architecture, landscape design, and water management. Alongside its planning and consulting work, the team develops and installs products that bring diverse plant life, shade, and cooling into urban spaces.

One example is the Sonnenarkade, a modular structure that supports climbing plants over a shaded seating area and incorporates a water reservoir and sensor-based irrigation. I led the Sonnenarkade’s visualization efforts and coordinated its development with the steel manufacturer. Together, we resolved fabrication challenges to keep the design within budget and straightforward to build, while accommodating different climbing plants, solar panels, sensors, and a means of refilling the water tank.

I also played a leading role in developing the concept and planning BEEOTOPIA’s collaboration with Lithon Plus on L-TEC Green, a range of living wall systems for existing concrete retaining walls. The aim was to turn these grey surfaces into planted spaces that support biodiversity, help improve air quality, and bring beauty to the built environment. During development, I also wrote the specifications for the three different systems so that planners could easily incorporate them into their projects.
